You have imagined it: the perfect post-pregnancy body with some diet and exercise—an unreal, exceptional figure that can still knock out your partner. The reality is that it’s more difficult than you imagined, and with all the diets, baby belly workouts and push-up bras you’ve tried, you still don’t feel like yourself.

After the gift of childbirth, women often find themselves—whether within months or years—yearning for a change from the physical effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding. The Mommy Makeover is an attempt to provide a change, and women are looking to the procedures included, hoping to retain their confidence and pursue the body they had prior to pregnancy.

Calgary plastic surgeon Dr. George Hamilton states that women have much higher self-esteem after the procedures.

“They feel they look a lot better,” said Dr. Hamilton. “They have better self-esteem, they’re a little happier with their partners because they weren’t happy about how they looked—and that’s actually the big issue. They don’t talk about it that much, but that’s the issue.”

The Mommy Makeover often includes breast lift or augmentation, liposuction, and a tummy tuck. The breast lift can be provided alone or with implants, restoring the shape and volume of breasts, while the tummy tuck removes and tightens stretched skin. Other options include thigh lift and liposuction, as well as arm lift and liposuction.

The procedures included aim to correct the physical changes that come with childbirth, yet it is important to realize that lifestyle maintenance is also crucial with any plastic surgery. Women are encouraged to lose all the weight they plan to before the surgery for an easier transition and healing process post-surgery.

“For breast surgery with the new cohesive gel implants, [complications] are minimal,” explains Dr. Hamilton. “If you put the implants under the muscle, the capsular contracture rate is almost zero, fluid collection and hematoma are almost zero, and complications are very low. In the abdominoplasty, sometimes there is asymmetry, [patients] may be off work for a little longer, and complications can include fluid collection seroma. If they’re young, healthy patients, complication rates are quite low. New anesthetic techniques are very safe.”

Other common complications following the Mommy Makeover include excess skin at the end of breast or abdominal incisions, as well as infection, bleeding or hematoma, poor scarring, inflammation and prolonged swelling. There are issues to be discussed with a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon that are relevant to the procedures to be completed.

ASPS recommends several tips. They suggest that any intentional weight loss is completed before surgery, advising that patients ask to see before and after photos of their plastic surgeon’s recent work. Clarify any questions and necessary information required before making the choice. With the number of women who have struggled with the efforts they have put forward to obtain their previous body and shape, this custom-made surgery is a reminder that, in educating yourself on your options, there is possibility for change.
