  • A breast lift lifts, reshapes and rejuvenates the breast
  • It corrects a saggy breast, tightens loose skin and repositions the nipple into a more cosmetically appealing position
  • Potential risks may include bleeding, infection, asymmetry and the loss of sensation to the nipple

As you age, you realize that your once perky breasts are just not where they used to be. Whether your breasts began to sag after pregnancy, became weighed down due to their large size over time or just naturally hang low, there is a viable solution available – a cosmetic procedure that can help you get your breasts back up to where you want them.

“A breast lift lifts, reshapes and rejuvenates the breast,” said Dr. Martin Jugenburg, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Humber River Regional Hospital and the Toronto Cosmetic Surgery Institute (TCSI). “It corrects a saggy breast, tightens loose skin and repositions the nipple into a more cosmetically appealing position. A breast lift also is used to reshape breasts that do not have a normal round contour.”

Dr. Jugenburg outlined the three main methods used to perform a breast lift. A Benelli breast lift is the best option for women who have very mild sagging and require only one to two centimetres of lifting.

The Benelli breast lift repositions the nipple, which means that there is very little scarring, and the minimal scarring that does occur is isolated on the areola. Dr. Jugenburg noted that this variant is not a true breast lift, as it only repositions the nipple and doesn’t really lift the breast.

The vertical breast lift procedure, however, would be classified as a full-fledged breast lift, where the breast in its entirety is lifted and reshaped. Dr. Jugenburg explained that with a vertical breast lift, an incision is made around the areola, as well as along a line from the areola to the breast fold.

He added that the vertical breast lift is used for women who require more than two centimetres of lifting, and that this procedure is usually sufficient for most women. Thirdly, for those with “very large and very pendulous breasts,” an anchor-like incision is required where there is a scar (like in the vertical breast lift), plus an additional scar in the breast fold.

Although major complications from breast lift surgery are uncommon, potential risks may include bleeding, infection, asymmetry and the loss of sensation to the nipple.

Post-breast lift surgery, a patient should plan on taking three to five days off work, where they would do nothing, advised Dr. Jugenburg. After that initial time period, you may be able to return to an office job, but you should avoid any vigorous physical activities or gym workouts for six weeks. In order to maintain the results, you will also need to wear a surgical support bra for six weeks, which will help to hold the position and shape of your breasts.

A breast lift can be performed alone or be combined with a breast augmentation. Women who have given birth and who have lost volume in their breasts and are left with loose, hanging breasts after pregnancy often have the two procedures done at the same time, expanded Dr. Jugenburg.

“In such situations, implants add volume and the lift reshapes the breast to rejuvenate the look of a woman’s chest and reverse the effects of a pregnancy,” stated Dr. Jugenburg.  “The downtime is the same as after a breast lift alone.”

According to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, establishing a “no-fail support” system for your full recovery period is crucial to help ensure a smooth healing process. For instance, if you have children that are under five years old, you should have someone take care of them for a week. Also, to make life easier for yourself during the post-op period, store all the items you’ll need, such as movies, magazines and books, where they will be easily accessible, so that you won’t have to strain yourself by reaching for them.

The good news about breast lift surgery is that the results are often long lasting. When performed properly, and taking into account that you don’t have major weight fluctuations or go through pregnancy after the operation, according to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, your breasts should stay lifted for decades.
