It can be said with certainty that a healthy diet and consistent exercise regimen help ensure wellness.

However, running for miles on a treadmill or doing countless crunches daily does not always produce toned thighs or a flatter tummy. For some, these stubborn spots remain flabby and undefined, no matter how great the effort.

“UltraShape® Body Contour System is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment that is used for the reduction of stubborn fat deposits in both men and women,” said Dr. Martie Gidon, a cosmetic dermatologist and director of Gidon Aesthetics & MediSpa in Toronto who has been using the treatment since it was first approved in Canada, approximately seven years ago.

According to Dr. Gidon, the treatment uses focused ultrasound technology at precise depths within the subcutaneous fat layer. It targets and breaks down only fat cells on the abdomen, outer thighs, hips, back and flanks and leaves surrounding structures such as skin, blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue intact. There is a tracking and guidance system designed to deliver smooth, uniform body contouring results.

“When the fat cells are disrupted, the released triglycerides are processed by the body’s natural metabolic pathways in the liver in the same way that fat is processed during weight loss,” Dr. Gidon explained.

Treatments take about one hour per area. With the newest system, one, two or three layers of fat can be treated within the same pulse for a more effective result, depending on the thickness of the fat.

“The treatment can be performed without anesthetics and the only real side effect is the rare chance of a small blister,” added Dr. Gidon.

“Results may be seen as quickly as two weeks after the first procedure, but most individuals require about three treatments, depending on the amount of fat they have,” mentioned Dr. Gidon.

Treatments are performed two to four weeks apart and most people lose an average of four centimeters of the body circumference after the third treatment. There is no downtime after the procedure, and patients can resume normal activities immediately afterwards and are encouraged to exercise to burn off the released fat and to have a healthy diet.

In addition, Dr. Gidon noted that UltraShape® is used to contour the body—it is not a tool for weight loss.

“UltraShape® removes stubborn deposits of fat in people who are of average weight with a BMI [body mass index] of less than 29,” clarified Dr. Gidon. “It is for healthy individuals who exercise and have a healthy diet, avoiding refined sugars and high glycemic index foods. These individuals just can’t lose stubborn areas of fat, regardless of exercise and diet. They are not interested in a surgical procedure. They want to look better in a bathing suit and want their clothes to fit better.”

That being said, the results of UltraShape® are long-lasting – and a healthy diet and lifestyle will help keep it that way.

“The fat removal is permanent, since the fat cells are destroyed. The only way to regain the fat is to increase calories with food or decrease burning of fat with less exercise,” Dr. Gidon explained.
