Lip Fillers, How To Get A Plumped-Up Pout

Arguably one of the most erogenous parts of a woman’s body, the lips can create a sense of allure, connote sexuality and allow you to convey feelings for another without saying a word. Full, plump lips are sensual and youthful – a common desire of women seeking lip augmentation.

“The lip is a very sensuous part of the body,” said Dr. Kris Conrad, a facial plastic – head and neck surgeon in Toronto and founder of the Nasal and Facial Plastic Cosmetic Surgery Institute. “It’s also the object of sexual attraction and should create nice balance with the facial features.”

Dr. Conrad pointed out that thinning of the lips is a natural process related to aging, and lip injections are a helpful addition to facial rejuvenation. Lip-filler material has evolved over time from collagen injections to hyaluronic acid gel designed to last longer than the originals, which according to Dr. Conrad, is now perhaps the safest from side effects and most commonly used material.

The filler is injected into the shallow sub-muscular area of the lip usually at the inner aspect. At times, the injection may be used very sparingly at the vermillion border (border around the lips) to emphasize the outer lip definition. To obtain a smooth augmentation, the lip is massaged gently after the injection.

Filling the lips typically takes around 15 minutes. Dr. Conrad said that the majority of injectable fillers contain a numbing solution, which makes it unnecessary to use separate freezing injections similar to those used for dental procedures, which can distort the lip prior to the lip augmentation treatment. A cold compress can also be applied to the lips before injecting for additional comfort in some patients.

In some instances, because of the rich blood supply to the lips, patients may experience bruising and swelling for up to seven days in rare circumstances and should allow for such a possibility when planning their social and work activities.

“We usually ask patients not to be kissing and smiling for 48 hours after injection to allow the material to settle,” said Dr. Conrad. “I usually ask them to give themselves five to seven days before they judge the final result.”

According to Dr. Conrad, the effect of hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvederm® or Restylane®, lasts up to eight months or at times, slightly longer. It is possible to add more volume if necessary any time after the initial injection.

With the current trend to emphasize lip fullness, Dr. Conrad warned against the negative impact of over-injection,

“which creates a grotesque appearance, disrupting facial harmony.”

He indicated it may be desirable to under-correct initially rather than augment too much. If necessary, over-injected lips can be corrected by using hyaluronidase, an enzyme that dissolves the hyaluronic acid gel augmentation material.

Complications from injectable fillers are rare, but can be devastating to the patient. Among those that may result from hyaluronic acid gel fillers, Dr. Conrad listed necrosis of the tissue, where people could lose part of their face, and blindness due to injectable material getting into the blood vessels. Also, candidates for lip augmentation should not have medical conditions that require taking blood thinners as the filler injection may result in excessive bleeding.

According to Dr. Conrad, well-defined full lips in harmony with other features are important in facial aesthetics in both genders. As lip contour and desired fullness are different in males and females, it’s important to consult a qualified cosmetic specialist who can make the proper decision on how much filler is required.

“Choosing a surgeon for facial cosmetic surgery can be a daunting experience,” Dr. Conrad explained. “Using the Internet as the sole source of authority or visiting the doctor next door because of convenience is the incorrect approach. Interview a number of surgeons, verify their qualifications and ask to see results. That way you will feel you have done your homework before you proceed with any type of injection or facial surgery.”
