Eyelash transplants are considered a natural and pleasing resolution for those whose lashes don’t grow naturally or at all.

“It’s placing single hair grafts into eyelash [the eyelids] to increase density,” said Dr. Neil Mowchun of the Winnipeg Hair Transplant Clinic. “Each graft is singly inserted into the eyelid. One usually harvests hair of low diameter from close to the nape of the neck to resemble natural eyelashes.”

The procedure will generally take about two hours, with either a dermatologist, oculoplastic, facial or plastic surgeon who specializes in eyelash transplants utilizing hairs from somewhere else on your body –usually from the back of your head. These hairs and their roots will then be scrutinized under a microscope and individually transplanted beneath the eyelids while the patient is under sedation. Eyelash transplants usually involve the transfer of approximately 100-500 hairs into both eyelids, and your new eyelashes will grow just like your old ones.

Eyelash transplants are a permanent solution, but as is always the case with any surgical procedure, you should consult with a medical professional prior to undergoing an operation. Dr. Mowchun noted he wouldn’t do this procedure unless the patient is free from trichotillomania (compulsion to remove hair).

With any surgery, there is always a risk involved, required care and upkeep on your behalf. While it should be taken into consideration that regular curling and trimming of your new lashes will be a must, as asymmetrical growth can result, Dr. Mowchun placated the concerns of those who are considering the procedure.

“There are generally no significant risks at all,” he said. “The upkeep is minimal, but you need to trim eyelash hairs from time to time to avoid excessive length.”

Your surgeon should evaluate your hair’s precise extent of wave or curl before the procedure. For those who are pursuing an esthetic upgrade or different look for their lashes, an eyelash transplant is not required. Latisse®, a prescription treatment that stimulates and protracts eyelash growth can be used instead.

“There are generally no significant risks at all,” he said. “The upkeep is minimal, but you need to trim eyelash hairs from time to time to avoid excessive length.”

“Eyelash transplants are involved in increasing density of eyelashes as opposed to Latisse®, which increases the caliber of existing hairs,” Dr. Mowchun explained. “Latisse® can be especially useful for those with undersized or scarce lashes, as it essentially assists your lashes to grow heavier and longer.”

Whether you’ve lost your lashes or they no longer grow to your contentment, rest assured that there are satisfactory esthetic solutions for you.
